Unable to defend itself with its horns, it purportedly defends itself by expelling caustic feces at its pursuers, burning them and ensuring its escape. First described by Pliny the Elder and later included in medieval bestiaries, the bonnacon's excrement was said to be highly destructive. Illustrations often depicted the creature humorously, emphasizing the comedic reactions of its victims.

Image copied from the article Medieval Illustrations of Bonnacons found at The Public Domain Review, an online journal and not-for-profit project dedicated to the exploration of curious and compelling works from the history of art, literature, and ideas.

Date

circa 1500

Source

The Public Domain Review: Medieval Illustrations of Bonnacons

Description English: Medieval miniature from an illuminated manuscript (bestiary) depicting a bonnacon, a legendary animal spraying acidic excr...
["organic-icon.png","low-carbon-icon.png","ethical-icon.png
Printed T-shirt
Certified Organic Cotton t-shirt, 155g/m2.
